Due to the pandemic my piano studio had to move completely online within a few days. The online lessons were so successful that encouraged by my pupils who preferred it, I decided to stay with this format. Whilst new pupils may feel unsure of trying online learning again after their less than positive experiences from less confident online teaching during the pandemic, I have hundreds of hours of experience of successfully teaching online and have developed a thriving teaching practice that works for all ages.
My pupils have told me that they decided to stay online for a range reasons; from no commute making scheduling easier and not having to deal with the stress of bad weather or driving conditions to siblings no longer having to be dragged along to lessons and seeing the pupils play their own instruments allowed me to trouble shoot their set up that otherwise would not have been picked up. They all said, no matter what their age, that lessons became more appealing and that they were happy with their progress.
I found that online improved my pupils 'ear', created more confidence due to not relying on me to mark up their music and allowed both myself and pupil to continue with lessons during illness. Change of location no longer became an obstacle to learning with pupils maintaining the stability of weekly lessons when living at two different locations or going off to university, I have even continued teaching when pupils help look after their grandchildren away from home (suitcases and keyboards will travel!). Online teaching has also opened up new opportunities to use technology such as screen sharing and allowing music notation software to be used during composition projects.
What Technology Do I Need to use for Online Lessons?
Once you have access to either an acoustic or electric piano/keyboard, basic technology is all that is required and access to a printer. You can use a computer, tablet or even a phone for lessons. Skype is my preferred platform to teach on, however I also use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger for those that prefer it (I'm an android user so Facetime can not be used). I am more than happy to talk you through the process and troubleshoot any issues you may feel you have. If you are worried that a lack of technological experience will be a problem, be assured that I have successfully helped pupils from 7 to 80 years to become familiar and comfortable with online teaching.
